The City of Jersey City, Mayor Steven Fulop, Office of Municipal Council and Office of Cultural Affairs are proud to recognize the Indian Patriots of New Jersey as we celebrate the 74th Anniversary of Independence of India during the Flag Raising Ceremony on Thursday, August 12, 2021.

The observance of the 74th Anniversary of India’s Independence reaffirms the dedication of the Indian people all around the world to the highest ideals of democracy and freedom. It is a celebration that recognizes the leadership of Mahatma Ghandi whose philosophy of non-violence was used in creative ways including Ghandi’s famous march to the sea to make salt – which was a precursor to the civil rights marches in the United States. As a result, India’s Independence was achieved and is a testament to the principles of fairness, dignity, peace and democracy.

The members of Indian community has directly contributed to the diversity and positive growth of Jersey City in various fields, including education, entrepreneurship, government, literature, drama, sculpture, music, food, and culture, as well as all aspects of life throughout the United States and abroad; and continues to influence our beliefs, embedded values and quest for independence.  The City of Jersey City and members of the Indian community commemorate this day by proudly displaying the flags of the United States and India together, high above City Hall, in recognition of the socially adopted culture and ethnic diversity of our community of Jersey City.

A group of people holding the flag before it is raised. The National Flag is a horizontal tricolour of India saffron (kesaria) at the top, white in the middle and India green at the bottom in equal proportion. In the centre of the white band is a navy blue wheel which represents the chakra.
