The City of Jersey City, Mayor Steven M. Fulop, the Office of Municipal Council and the Office of Cultural Affairs are proud to recognize the Jersey City Puerto Rican Heritage and Festival Week during the 61st Annual Flag Raising Ceremony on Monday, August 9, 2021.

The Puerto Rican Day Parade held annually is one of the largest and longest-running parades in Hudson County and the State of New Jersey. The parade was founded in 1961 by Emilio Solivan, Diego Berrios, Cristino Roman, Jose Mendez, Rafael Bou, Primitivo Valle, Santiago Bonnila, and Juan Benitez as a vehicle to unite and organize the Puerto Rican community in Jersey City.

The Puerto Rican Heritage, Arts and Culture Day celebrates the rich culture and the vibrant spirit of the Puerto Rican community here in Jersey City and beyond. The Puerto Rican community continues to enrich the lives of others through their achievements in education, religion, politics, entrepreneurship, sports, literature, drama, sculpture, music, food, culture and the arts as well as all aspects of life throughout the United States and abroad.  Their community continues to influence our beliefs, embedded values and quest for independence.

The City of Jersey City and members of the Puerto Rican community commemorate this day by proudly displaying the flags of the United States and Puerto Rico together, high above City Hall, in recognition of the socially adopted culture and ethnic diversity of our community of Jersey City.

A group of people hold the flag before it is raised. The three red stripes represent the blood from the brave warriors. The two white stripes represent the victory and peace that they would have after gaining independence. The white star represented the island of Puerto Rico. The blue represents the sky and blue coastal waters.
