The City of Jersey City, Mayor Steven M. Fulop, Office of Municipal Council and Office of Cultural Affairs are proud to recognize the Ukrainian National Home and the Ukrainian Community Center as we celebrate the 30th Anniversary of  Ukraine’s Independence during the Flag Raising Ceremony on Tuesday, August 24, 2021.

The parliament of Ukraine added to the will of the Ukrainian people by formally declaring an independent Ukrainian state on August 24, 1991, thereby, taking the first step towards establishing a free and democratic state and ending the brutal totalitarian regime who cost the lives of millions of Ukrainians. After centuries of foreign dominations under both the Russian Empire and then the Soviet totalitarian regime, Ukrainians today continue to honor the brave people of Ukraine in their struggle to maintain the internationally recognized territorial integrity of their nation as sovereign and inviolable.

The efforts of Ukrainians around the world to preserve their language, culture and history must be acknowledged and encouraged so that this effort continues for the sake of future generations. Such preservations have allowed Ukrainians to make significant contributions to the culture and society across United States.

a group of peoplehold the flag before it is raised. The flag of Ukraine is a banner of two equally sized horizontal bands of blue and yellow. The combination of blue and yellow as a symbol of Ukrainian lands comes from the flag of the Kingdom of Galicia–Volhynia used in the 12th century. As a national flag, the blue and yellow bicolour has been officially used since the 1848 Spring of Nations, when it was hoisted over the Lviv Rathaus
