The Independence day of Mexico Flag Raising
September 16 @ 12:00 pm - 12:30 pm
The City of Jersey City, Mayor Steven Fulop, the Municipal Council Members and Office of the Cultural Affairs are honored to recognize the Consulate General of Mexico in New York on the 211th Anniversary of Independence of Mexico during the Flag Raising Ceremony on Thursday, September 16, 2021.
On September 16, 1810, a progressive priest named Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla became the Father of Mexican Independence with a historic proclamation urging his fellow Mexicans to take up arms against the Spanish government. Known as the “Grito de Dolores,” Hidalgo’s declaration launched a decade-long struggle that ended 300 years of Spain’s colonial rule, established an independent Mexico and helped cultivate a unique Mexican identity. Its anniversary is celebrated by Mexicans and people of Mexican ancestry around the world.
The Mexican community in Jersey City directly contribute to the vibrant cultural diversity and positive growth of our community, where they continue to succeed as citizens and serve as inspiring role models to others. The City of Jersey City and the Mexican-Americans will proudly fly the flags of the United States and Mexico high above City Hall in recognition of the cherished cultural and ethnic diversity of our community. It is also a reaffirmation of the long friendship built on common values and an abiding love for freedom.
