More about the artists and exhibition:
Lauren’s work aims to take the tools of childhood – paper, scissors, glue – and the shapes of childhood – lines, scribbles, blocks – and create vibrant, three-dimensional artwork. Her compositions are often patterns of light and dark, shape and form, color and contrast that intrigue her, and working in paper allows her to explore those visual components without regard to the accuracy of representing a specific subject or object.
“For ‘Layered and on Edge’ my goal was to show a variety of the techniques that I use to create dimension in my work”, said Lauren Schwartz. “Paper sheets overlapping each other, standing on their sides, folded into shapes and different combination of these methods. The finished pieces resemble stained glass in some cases and more traditional origami in others, but the common thread is that they are all created using only paper and glue.”
According to curator Kristin J. DeAngelis, she had been following Lauren for nearly two years. “Her work intrigued me. The triple P of patterns, precision and patience in which she needs to work in is incredible.”
Lauren Schwartz was born in sunny Miami but grew up in the Garden State. She deems herself a “nerdy creative”, completing a BA in Economics from NYU in 1990, followed up by a BFA in Graphic Design from Rhode Island School of Design in 1995. She’s built a career out of using both sides of her brain by working as both a designer and a programmer; and is currently Partner and Creative Director at Outside the Box Interactive in Jersey City, NJ.
After working in the digital realm for 20-plus years, she’s decided to get creative in the physical realm again by working with her hands and tangible media. Lauren’s three-dimensional paper creations are a physical manifestation of her mathematical mind meeting her imaginative inner child, who just wants to create beautiful things for others to enjoy.
“LAYERED AND ON EDGE: Cut Paper Artwork” by Lauren Schwartz is the sixth exhibition that artist/curator Kristin J. DeAngelis will organize for SILVERMAN.
