Philippine Flag Raising 2022
June 9 @ 12:00 pm - 12:30 pm
The City of Jersey City, Office of the Municipal Council and Office of the Cultural Affairs were proud to recognize the Philippine Consulate General of East Coast, Philippine American Friendship Community (PAFCOM, Inc.) and members of the Filipino community on their 124th Anniversary of Philippine Independence during the Flag Raising Ceremony on Thursday, June 9, 2022.
The Philippine Declaration of Independence took place on June 12, 1898 when Filipino revolutionary forces, under the leadership of General Emilio Aguinaldo, publicly read the Act of Declaration of Independence proclaiming the sovereignty and independence of the Philippine Islands from the colonial rule of Spain, after American and Filipino revolutionary forces defeated Spain at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War.
This event was also the first time the Philippine National Anthem, “Lupang Hinirang” was performed publicly and the first time the Philippine flag was displayed. President Macapagal said the proclamation of Philippine independence on June 12, 1898 gave colonial Asia its first free and united nation. He added, “There had been other Asian revolutions before. But the revolution which culminated on June 12, 1898 was the first successful national revolution in Asia since the coming of the West, and the Republic to which it gave birth was the first democratic Republic outside of the Western hemisphere.”
Jersey City’s Filipino-Americans have realized their dreams through hard work, perseverance, and a cooperative spirit that demonstrates their boundless potential. The contributions of Filipinos in the fields of education, politics, religion, culture, science, industry and business have helped shape this great city and the history of the United States. These accomplishments have unquestionably been an important asset to Jersey City and to our nation’s growth and cultural development over the centuries.
