The City of Jersey City, Mayor Steven Fulop, Office of Municipal Council and Office of Cultural Affairs congratulates the Kiwanis Club of Jersey City and its members on their Centennial Anniversary during the Flag Raising Ceremony on Tuesday, November 23, 2021.

Kiwanis International was founded in 1915 by businessmen in Detroit, Michigan, United States. The organization was initially called the Supreme Lodge Benevolent Order of Brothers but changed its name to Kiwanis a year later. The name “Kiwanis” was coined from an American Indian expression, “Nunc Kee-wanis,” which means, “We trade.” In 1920, the motto of Kiwanis became “We Build.” It remained the motto until 2005 when members voted to change it to “Serving the children of the world.” In the early years, members focused on business networking, but in 1919, the organization changed its focus to service to children. Kiwanis became an international organization with the founding of the Kiwanis Club of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, in 1916. Kiwanis clubs formed in communities across the United States and Canada until the 1960s, when worldwide expansion was approved.

The Kiwanis Club of Jersey City actively engages its membership in meaningful community, regional, and world service activities aimed at strengthening the Kiwanis Family and increasing the size and diversity of its membership while protecting the integrity of the local Club. It provides financial support for youth programs and projects and assists young people in attaining vocational excellence.

Kiwanis Club’s outstanding commitment and exemplary public service help make Jersey City a better place to live.  They are passionate about making a difference, helping children grow and succeed.
