H2Ow Far Can You Walk: 5K Walkathon
June 25 @ 8:30 am - 1:00 pm
H2Ow Far Can You Walk: 5K Walk-a-Thon will take place in Liberty State Park on Saturday, June 25th. This special event aims to raise awareness about the growing water crisis in sub-Saharan Africa and raise funds to reconstruct 250 dried, abandoned, broken water wells in countries such as Chad, Nigeria, and Cameroon. These restored wells will provide access to clean, healthy water to over 250,000 people who currently live in water-scarce communities.
Although clean water has been deemed a fundamental human right, more than 2.2 billion people do not have access to this precious resource worldwide. Women and young girls are responsible for water collection in 8 out of 10 households. These treks for clean water usually last 45 – 90 minutes, leaving them exposed to gender-based violence and sexual assault. Collectively, women and girls spend 200 million hours collecting water for their families every day – that’s 8.3 million days or 22,800 years.
In the wake of COVID-19, hygiene and sanitation have never been more important. Therefore, walking in Jersey City in June will be felt around the globe. H2Ow Far Can You Walk will not be any ordinary walk in the park. Together, we will unlock the power of movement for a more equitable, sustainable, and healthier planet.
Sustainability is the bedrock of Embrace Relief’s Clean Water: Fountains of Hope initiative, which restores old, dried, abandoned water wells. Reconstructing wells save precious time, money, and resources and can be done for a third of the cost and time needed to build a new one. For reference, Embrace Relief prices the construction of a new well at $3,950 while reconstruction costs are only $1,300! Through our years of work, we have seen firsthand that restoring communities’ access to clean water improves overall community health, decreases gender-based violence, strengthens the workforce, and increases school attendance which, in turn, helps communities break free from the vicious cycle of poverty.
Not only can you help us save lives, but you can also help us improve hundreds of thousands of people’s lives and send them on the path toward sustenance, economic growth, gender equality, and happiness! Every $1 you donate will provide 2020 gallons of water. Quite simply, water is life, and YOU have the power to supply it to those who desperately need it today!
The higher the tier, the more swag for you!
