Ecuadorian Flag Raising 2023
May 24 @ 1:30 pm - 2:00 pm
The City of Jersey City, Office of the Municipal Council and Office of the Cultural Affairs were proud to recognize Poder Ecuatoriano USA, Poder Latino USA and Poder Hispano Inc. to celebrate the 214th Anniversary of Ecuador’s Independence during the Flag Raising Ceremony on Wednesday, May 24 2023. National Anthem of both nations will be played.
After nearly three hundred years of Spanish rule, the citizens of Quito were the first in Latin America to rebel and declare independence on August 10, 1809 – the year in which the Primer Grito de Independencia (First Call for Independence) sounded from the City of Quito. This independence was short-lived and was suppressed by the Spanish in 24 days. However, the efforts of this small city was seen as a key milestone in the movement across Central and South America that would eventually lead to independence from Europe. Ecuador celebrated independence on May 24, 1822 following victory at the Battle of Pichincha under the command of Simón Bolívar. On May 24th, military parades commemorate the decisive battle, which took place just outside Quito. Ecuador’s successful departure from Spanish control heralded the forthcoming Independence of many other Latin American nations. The nation’s inspiring struggle will certainly stand in history for centuries to come.
The Ecuadorian community of Jersey City, Hudson County and across the nation directly contributes to the vibrant cultural diversity and positive growth of our community, where they continue to succeed as citizens and serve as inspiring role models to others. The City of Jersey City will proudly fly the United States and Ecuador flags high above City Hall in celebration of the rich heritage of the Ecuadorians and in recognition of the cherished cultures and ethnic diversity of our community.
