Cuban Flag Raising

The City of Jersey City, Mayor Steven Fulop, the Municipal Council Members and the Office of Cultural Affairs were honored to recognize Cuban American Alliance for Leadership and Education with members of the Cuban American community on their 119th Anniversary of Cuban Independence during  the Flag Raising ceremony on Thursday, May 20, 2021.  National Anthems of both nations were played.

 The Cuban American Alliance for Leadership and Education (CAALE) is a non-profit organization centered on supporting education within the Cuban American community. This mission takes root in three key components : funds merit-based college scholarships, administers a leadership development program and facilitates cultural education.

 Independence Day is a public holiday in Cuba observed on 10th October. Also known as the Anniversary of the beginning of the War of Independence, the “Dia de la Independencia” marks the start of Cuba’s struggle for independence from Spain in 1868. The Spanish–American War resulted in a Spanish withdrawal from the island in 1898. Following the defeat of Spain in 1898, United States remained in Cuba as an occupying power until the Republic of Cuba was formally installed on May 19, 1902. On May 20, 1902, the United States relinquished its occupation authority over Cuba; and

 The City of Jersey City and the Cuban American community will proudly fly the flags of the United States and Cuba high above City Hall in recognition of the cherished cultural and ethnic diversity of our community. It is also a reaffirmation of the long friendship built on common values and an abiding love for freedom.
