The flyer has a ribbon along the top of the Colombian flag colors gold, blue and red. The information for the event is listed in the middle to the lower portion of the flyer.

The City of Jersey City, Mayor Steven Fulop, the Municipal Council Members and the Office of Cultural Affairs are proud to recognize members of the Colombian community as we honor the 204th  Anniversary of Colombia’s Independence during the Flag Raising Ceremony on Wednesday, July 19, 2023.

The indigenous societies such as the Musicas, Quimbaya and Tayrona inhabited and thrived in the area now known as Colombia during the pre-Colombian period.  Based on archeological finds, those indigenous people had advanced societies with government’s agriculture and trade and were some of the most developed groups in South America. The City of Santa Marta was founded in 1525 and became the first Spanish settlement in Colombia. Founded in 1538, the City of Santa Fe de Bogota became the capital of the Viceroyalty of New Granada in 1717, an administrative center for the Spanish possessions in the New World which included the union of the countries now known as Venezuela, Ecuador and Panama.  On 20th July 1810, the citizens of Bogota created the first representative council to defy Spanish authority. Full independence from Spain was proclaimed in 1813.  In 1819, Latin American hero Simon Bolivar led the cause for independence and by the Battle of Boyaca in August had secured permanent independence for Greater Colombia.

The Colombian community  has directly contributed to the diversity and positive growth of Jersey City in various fields, including education, entrepreneurship, government, literature, drama, sculpture, music, food, and culture, as well as all aspects of life throughout the United States and abroad; and continues to influence our beliefs, embedded values and quest for independence.

Over two hundred years ago, a new flag flying proudly became a symbol of freedom for Colombians.  Today the City of Jersey City and members of the Colombian community commemorate this day by proudly displaying the flags of the United States and the Republic of Colombia together, high above City Hall in recognition of the socially adopted culture and ethnic diversity of our community of Jersey City. This momentous occasion reflects the camaraderie built between the United States and Colombia and our enduring love for freedom, liberty, and democracy that today the world is still inspired by.
