The City of Jersey City, Mayor Steven M. Fulop, the Jersey City Municipal Council, the Office of Cultural Affairs were honored to commemorate the 211th Anniversary of Venezuelan Independence during the Flag Raising Ceremony on Thursday, July 6, 2023.

Venezuela is a country on the northern coast of South America with diverse natural attractions. Spain colonized the territory of Venezuela in 1522 amid resistance from the indigenous peoples. In 1811 it became one of the first Spanish-American territories to declare independence from the Spanish and to form part, as a department, of the first federal Republic of Colombia. It separated as a fully sovereign country in 1830.

Venezuela’s modern history was forever changed in 1999, the Constituent Assembly wrote a new Constitution of Venezuela. Law determined the basic design of the current Venezuelan flag on March 28, 1864. Its arc of stars represents the original provinces. The coat of arms used on the government and military Authorities flag features a wheat sheaf; a white horse; a panoply of tools, weapons and flags; two cornucopias; and branches of laurel and pal tied with a ribbon. The flag underwent minor changes in 2006. An eighth star was added to fulfill the wish of the national hero Simon Bolivar.

The members of El Cocotero Foundation, Casa La Cultura Venezolana Sol Dance Center join Councilman Richard Boggiano and Councilwoman Mira Prinz-Arey in raising the Venezuela Flag
