The City of Jersey City, Mayor Steven Fulop, the Municipal Council Members and the Office of Cultural Affairs with Office of Sustainability, Jersey City Board of Education and Jersey City Public schools were proud to celebrate Earth Day 2021 during the Flag Raising Ceremony on Thursday, April 22, 2021.

Millions of Americans came together to celebrate the First Earth Day on April 22, 1970 created by Senator Gaylord Nelson as a way to force this issue onto the national agenda. Students, teachers, activists, elected officials, and countless others challenged our Nation to confront our most urgent environmental issues and rallied around a single message: the success of future generations depends upon how we act today. The global community still faces extraordinary challenges, such as global health issues, food and water shortages, and economic struggles. All people, regardless of race, gender, income, or geography, have a moral right to a healthy, sustainable environment with economic growth.

Earth Day is the beginning of a new year for environmental stewardship commitments and implementing sustainability efforts in every community.  It is understood that the citizens of the global community must step forward and take action to create a green economy to combat the aforementioned global challenges. A green economy can be achieved on the individual level through educational efforts, public policy, and consumer activism campaigns. It is necessary to broaden and diversify this global movement to achieve maximum success.

As we commemorate Earth Day this year, we reflect on the challenges that remain before us and recommit to the spirit of togetherness and shared responsibility that galvanized a movement 51 years ago. During the Flag Raising Ceremony on Thursday, April 22nd, the City of Jersey City encouraged our residents, businesses, and institutions to use Earth Day to celebrate Earth and commit to building a sustainable and green economy.
