July 6, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 12:30 pm

The flyer i a blue sky with the sun shinning through the Caricom flag. The middle of the page down is the flag raising information along with two other events taking place.

The City of Jersey City, Mayor Steven M. Fulop, the Jersey City Municipal Council, the Office of Cultural Affairs were proud to recognize the 27th Anniversary of Jersey City West Indian Caribbean American Carnival Association, its community members and the 2022 Jersey City Carnival Grand Marshals during the Flag Raising Ceremony on Wednesday, July 6, 2022.

The City of Jersey City congratulates the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), including the Consulate Generals of the West Indies and Caribbean; Antigua, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Dominica, Guyana, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Lucia, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago.   The emigration from the Caribbean to the American colonies began as early as 1619, and much like the United States, the countries of the Caribbean faced the obstacles of slavery and colonialism in their struggle for independence.  From 1804 through 1983, through determination and will, the Caribbean countries finally gained their independence.

The West Indies and the Caribbean culture is made up of a thriving community, whose members continue  to rise to levels of prominence throughout the United States, especially here in Jersey City. In recognition of the cherished cultural and ethnic diversity of our community, the City of Jersey City will proudly fly the flags of American and CARICOM high above City Hall. It is also a reaffirmation of the long friendship built on common values and an abiding love for freedom.
